Does your company roster include anyone younger than 28? If so, you may have a serious tech security exposure on your hands.
“Millennial” workers (anyone who’s 27 or younger) are used to having technology their way — and they want their workplace technology to follow suit. This could put your company’s sensitive financial info in jeopardy.
There are ways to minimize your risk.
You can probably understand that twenty-somethings have grown up with the Internet, cell phones and BlackBerry’s. So they’ve had a lot of time to develop their own preferences.
The trouble comes when those preferences spill into your workplace. According to a new survey by consulting giant Accenture, most of these employees prefer to use their own technology and gadgets on the clock.
And if they feel what you offer is inadequate, they won’t hesitate to go their own way — without approval.
What they turn to most without the company green light:
- mobile phones (39%)
- instant messaging (27%)
- social networking sites (28%)
- open source technology (19%)
- online applications (12%)
It’s worth getting together with your management team to hammer out a policy on what’s ok and what’s not before your company’s data is compromised by workers who use unapproved devices and applications.
